Functional Safety Assessment (FSA) Awareness and Appreciation
This 2 x ½ day training course is for people who are required to manage or implement IEC 61511 Stage 1-5 Functional Safety Assessment.
The IEC 61511 safety related standard recognises that functional safety assessment is essential to support the successful management and delivery of the necessary risk reduction requirements provided by safety instrumented systems.
The operation of an organisational functional safety management system will typically run in parallel with independent functional safety (FS) assessments.
FS audits and FS assessments of new safety projects and existing installed safety systems are a mandatory compliance requirement in accordance with the functional safety standards.
Within IEC 61511; there are several requirements within the standard identifying the ‘stages’ in the safety life cycle at which the functional safety assessment (FSA) activities shall be identified and performed.

Who is this for?
This course is aimed at projects, operations and engineering managers / engineers and safety specialists within an organisation responsible for managing or leading FSA requirements in support of achieving high levels of functional safety performance.
What prior study is recommended?
Completion of an awareness course in the subject area, or equivalent practical experience, beneficial but not essential.
At the end of the course you should be able to:
- Understanding the key requirements of the FSA process in the context of functional safety management
- Appreciation and awareness of relevant roles, expectations and compliance within each lifecycle FSA stage
- Requirements for FSA implementation planning and reporting
