Practical Risk Management for Risk and Control Owners
This course equips risk and control owners with the skills to produce clear, useful and evidence-based risk information. Participants will learn how to articulate risks effectively, assess exposure realistically, describe and evaluate controls, and identify appropriate treatment, monitoring and escalation activities.
Rather than focusing on a particular risk methodology, the course develops practical skills that can be applied within an organisation’s existing risk framework.
Outline
- Risk ownership in practice
- Identifying and articulating risks
- Assessing inherent and residual risk realistically
- Describing controls effectively
- Evaluating control effectiveness and residual risk
- Considering whether the control environment is proportionate
- Risk treatment, monitoring and escalation
Who is this for?
People who own, manage or contribute to risks and controls as part of their wider role, including risk owners, control owners and performers, operational and departmental managers.
The course is also suitable for risk professionals who support and challenge the first line.
What prior study is recommended?
No specialist risk-management experience or formal prior study is required. Familiarity with the participant’s own role, objectives and operational activities would be beneficial.
At the end of the course you should be able to:
- Explain the responsibilities of risk and control owners and how effective ownership supports organisational decision-making.
- Identify and clearly articulate risks, distinguishing them from causes, consequences, issues and incidents.
- Assess inherent and residual risk consistently using realistic and clearly reasoned assumptions.
- Describe controls clearly and evaluate their design, operation and effect on risk exposure.
- Identify when further treatment, monitoring, reassessment or escalation is required.
